Realm of Eternity: Dragon's Oath is an ambitious open-world RPG that dares to dream big. Developed by Mythforge Interactive over five years, it presents a living, breathing fantasy world of extraordinary scale — one filled with ancient ruins, dense forests, towering mountain ranges, and the ever-present threat of dragonkind. It is a game that will consume hundreds of hours of your life, and for the most part, you will be glad it did.
The world of Aethoria is genuinely spectacular. The environmental design team has created one of the most visually diverse game worlds in recent memory. Each region has its own distinct biome, culture, and history, and the attention to detail is remarkable — from the way light filters through forest canopies to the ancient inscriptions carved into dungeon walls. The main narrative is engaging, built around a prophecy concerning the return of the Elder Dragon Vorrathax and your character's role in either preventing or facilitating that event.
Where the story stumbles is in its pacing. The middle act drags considerably, with a series of fetch quests that feel disconnected from the main narrative thrust. This is a common RPG pitfall, but it is more noticeable here because the opening and closing acts are so compelling.
The combat system is deep and satisfying. Players can choose from six character archetypes at the outset, each with a unique skill tree and playstyle. The real depth emerges from the hybrid build system, which allows you to blend abilities from multiple archetypes as you progress. Boss encounters are the highlight — each requires genuine preparation and adaptation, particularly the dragon fights, which are among the most spectacular set pieces we have experienced in the genre.
On PC with high-end hardware, the game is a visual marvel. However, performance on mid-range systems is inconsistent, with frame rate drops occurring in densely populated areas. The developers have committed to a series of optimisation patches, and the situation has improved since launch, but it remains a consideration for players on older hardware.
Realm of Eternity: Dragon's Oath is a deeply impressive RPG that earns its place among the genre's finest. Its pacing issues and technical rough edges prevent it from reaching the very top tier, but the sheer ambition and quality of its world-building and combat make it an essential experience for RPG enthusiasts. Highly recommended for Australian players who enjoy long-form, narrative-driven adventures.
